Saratoga Springs city, or Saratoga for short, is located in the state of New York and has a population of approximately 25,000. As the name suggests, a number of mineral springs are found in the area, hence also the nickname, "Spa City". The economy of the city centers on tourism and the income from the Saratoga Race Course during the summer months. AMD has a manufacturing site in Saratoga Springs and Stewarts Shops are based in the city. It stands to reason that the Spring Water Company, with its bottled mineral water in a blue glass bottle, is the best known company in town.
The Saratoga Race Course, founded by John Hunter and William Travers, is what the city is really known for. This thoroughbred track attracts the crème de la crème of trainers, jockeys and horses in the nation. Their summer meeting lasts for six weeks starting at the end of July and going on till Labor Day. The Travers Stakes, or "Summer Derby", is the most important summer horse race in America. Also in the city is the casino and raceway, a harness racetrack that also has a video gaming facility, called the Racino.
The city takes its name from the springs in the area. The mineral water is believed to have healing powers and places such as the Lincoln Baths was where people would go to when seeking healing from the waters. Visitors are free to bottle the spring water for their own personal use. Columbian Springs, Deer Park Spring and Congress Spring are just a small number of the many springs in and around the city.
One of the attractions in the city is the 34 fiberglass horses that can be found in downtown Saratoga Springs. Visitors should enquire from the concierge or help desk at one of the luxury Saratoga Springs hotels about the shows at the SPAC. This covered amphitheater is the venue for the summer performances of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the NYC Ballet. The Native American Festival is housed on the grounds of the SPAC.
Visitors with an interest in history can visit several museums in the city. Take the family to the Museum of Racing as well as the Hall of Fame. The Museum of Dance should also prove interesting. The nightlife in the city is vibrant and varied. Caffè Lena is one of the first places where Bob Dylan performed. Tin&Lint is another of the city's famous bars. Aim for Putnam, Broadway and Caroline Streets where many pubs and eateries are to be found. Many movies have been filmed in and around Saratoga Springs, such as "The Way We Were", which starred Robert Redford and Barbara Streisand and "The Horse Whisperer" which was filmed in 1998. Make a night of it at the nearby Canfield Casino. Drive out to the Historic Park or the Spa State Park and enjoy nature and the outdoors.
Selected luxury Saratoga Springs hotels have on-site restaurants; many offer a buffet breakfast. Room service and 24-hour business centers are available. Guests at the hotels can also enjoy the indoor swimming pool as well as the equipped gym.
